It has as many Easter traditions as cantons - Switzerland. In the west of the country, "Les Pleureuses" - also known as "wives of lamentation" - carry Christ's tools of torture and Saint Veronica's sweat cloth through the streets on Good Friday.

The cities echo with prayers and songs. In Valais, on the other hand, bread, cheese and wine are distributed in the villages. In the past, people were only allowed to go out barefoot on Good Friday in order not to disturb the earth. Nowadays, shortly before sunrise on Easter Monday, the Welsh people go in small processions to the nearby hills. They welcome the sun, symbol of Christ's resurrection, with a dance.
